25 Clever Storage Solutions That Look Custom-Made and Cost Less

Home organization plays a crucial role in how your home looks and feels. Even the most beautifully designed interiors with breathtaking views and unique decor will feel out of place if they’re cluttered.

Say goodbye to messy corners and hello to chic, functional living. These clever storage ideas help you hide the clutter, save space, and make every inch of your home look intentional — without overspending.

Frequent decluttering sessions are essential to ensure your space looks neat. Still, without clever storage solutions, these efforts may all be in vain.

To help you address this challenge, we’ve prepared several easy, custom-made storage solutions to help you organize your home spaces.

Take a look!

1. Focus on the Entryway

Even though it may not seem like it, the entryway is one of the spaces that definitely needs a storage area. Considering it’s the first space leading to your home, guests frequent this space to remove shoes, hang coats and hats, or place their bags.

Without a clever storage solution, the space could quickly become cluttered, making your home look disorganized. Use storage baskets placed under the area bench to store items you usually need when stepping out. Add a hanging nook where you and your guests can hang coats and hats.

2. Opt for Sliding Doors

clever storage solutions 02

Sliding doors are a clever storage solution for adding secret storage to your space. They’re great for spaces where it’s not possible to install sweeping doors—the last thing you want is a half-opening door that won’t allow you to access all of your storage spaces.

Installing a sliding door system ensures you can access the space without compromising on sleek design. Since the doors slide along tracks, they allow you to save on every inch of space.

3. Install Floating Shelves

Home storage ideas don’t come much better or simpler than floating shelves. They’re easy to install and hold various items, and you can always add more shelf space whenever needed.

They’re mainly a great addition in spaces such as living rooms, where you can use them to display items of personal significance like books, vintage decor, figurines, or small succulents.

The trick to ensuring the shelves contribute to the aesthetic appeal is creating an arrangement pattern. For example, in my living room, the top shelf is always reserved for my houseplants, while the middle shelf is for my collectibles.

4. Go for Multipurpose Storage

One of my favorite clever storage solutions is multi-use storage space; think of poufs, footboard benches, or coffee tables with secret compartments.

These items not only serve the initial purpose they were meant for but also allow you to store items without taking up any extra space or compromising your room’s aesthetics. Various items can be used for this, and you can find them at most local furniture stores.

5. Utilize a Pegboard

Are you artistic or handy with tools but can’t find enough storage for them? What if I told you there’s a simple and budget-friendly storage solution you can finally use to clear that mess in the garage? And no, it’s not a toolbox!

What you need is a pegboard—a vertical storage tool organizer where you can hang hand-held items to keep them out of the way and make them easy to spot and access.

6. Fill Awkward Spaces

clever storage solutions 06

If you’re short on clever storage solutions, it may be time to make use of that awkward space you’ve been avoiding. Spaces like small nooks and gaps always seem too small or awkwardly shaped to fit anything, but with a bit of creativity, you can convert them into usable spaces.

Think of this as a chance to express your creativity. I recently converted the space under my stairs to extra storage space for miscellaneous items such as toys, and its functionality has so far exceeded my expectations.

7. Make a Design Statement

Architectural details add endless charm to your space. They contribute to and appeal to different elements within a room that’s outside the traditional design box. Arches and curves add an eye-catching focal point with intricate lines and atypical ceiling features.

If you can create it, it’ll not only add a unique storage space but can instantly contribute to the space’s beauty. To maximize the visual appeal, I usually opt for colorful items in this space, such as flowers or bold-colored vases.

8. Take to the Ceiling

If you want to make a dramatic statement with your clever storage solutions, nothing does the trick better than floor-to-ceiling storage units. They’re perfect for not only storing items but also as a display station for artwork or unique decor pieces.

Tailor the arrangement style and items to your personal preferences to add a bit of character. If you can’t access the top compartments, you can always add a small step ladder to use. If you are crafty enough, you can create the storage space for it, too.

9. Don’t Forget the Labels

An organization system can only work effectively if it’s easy to store and retrieve items, and one clever storage solution to ensure you don’t spend countless hours decluttering is labeling different storage spaces. Consider labeling your storage containers or baskets before shelving them.

This way, you’ll know where each item goes when organization day comes. I always insist on making the labels yourself rather than buying ready-made ones since it provides more flexibility.

10. Slide Out Drawers

clever storage solutions 10

Pull-out drawers make your storage space easy to organize. With this clever storage solution, you can say goodbye to hard-to-reach corners that often lead to underutilized spaces or things getting lost in cabinets.

I prefer them in spaces such as kitchens, where space is at a premium. You can also use them in your closet to add extra space for your accessories, folded clothes, or shoes.

11. Blend with the Background

Home storage doesn’t always have to be front and center. Sometimes, the best storage ideas are the inconspicuous ones that don’t instantly attract the eye. These can be built-in shelves or cabinets.

Paint the storage the same color as your walls to make it more minimalistic. You can even use matching fittings for a completely camouflaged look. Here, this bedroom wardrobe blends in seamlessly with the walls, creating a uniform, smooth look.

12. Try a Storage Basket

One simple staple for professional design, a storage basket, will always come in handy when you’re out of storage options. Not only are they easily accessible, but you can also move them around and use them for different needs.

While they may not cost much, a well-crafted storage basket will add an air of luxury and class to your space, not to mention make it look unique.

13. Hang with Door Dowels

clever storage solutions 13

No matter the size of your home, I can guarantee that you’ll always find vertical storage space. This may be in areas such as the back of doors, around the entryway, or even in your bathroom.

Unlike other storage solutions, vertical storage frees up your floor space, giving you more freedom to move around. One easy vertical storage solution is door dowels. They are cheap and easy to install and allow you to access everyday-use items like hats, coats, and bags.

14. Curate a Display

clever storage solutions 14

I’m a big fan of using storage as part of my space’s decor. Not everything needs to be tucked away—If you have unique items such as vases, artistic appliances, or small decor pieces, you can use them to create a distinctive focal point for your room.

Combine different shades, textures, or colors to create a well-rounded finish. Various materials can inspire different styles; for example, wood and bamboo can create a boho aesthetic.

15. Decant Your Goods

clever storage solutions 15

Storage ideas don’t always have to be traditionally designed and practical. Sometimes, you can make beautiful decor out of the most unconventional of items.

For example, adding decanting items to your kitchen will not only help you store food items for longer but also contribute to the visual statement. Try clear glass jars that allow the colors inside to liven up your space.

16. Hang Your Pots and Pans

clever storage solutions 16

If you frequently use your kitchen, you’ve probably encountered the dilemma of organizing pots and pans. Due to their handles, they just don’t seem to fit in drawers or cabinets, and you can’t stack them together since they hardly fit together; their bulkiness doesn’t help either.

Instead of spending countless hours trying to figure out the ideal cabinet, keep them on display by hanging them on a wall in your kitchen.

17. Organize with Drawer Dividers

clever storage solutions 17

Drawers indeed make for a good storage solution, but when left unattended, even the most well-organized drawers can quickly become chaotic with things jumbled up inside. This is where drawer dividers come in.

These dividers allow you to group like-for-like items, so each time you open your drawers, you can find exactly what you are looking for with no hassle. Try different-sized dividers so you can store differently sized items.

18. Combine Open and Closed Storage

clever storage solutions 18

Closed storage spaces allow you to keep your items away from dust and light that may affect them. In contrast, open storage spaces enable you to display some of your most beautiful items or decor that fits your space. Everyone has their preference, but if you’re stuck choosing between the two, you can always combine them.

This combined shelf and cabinet space organizes items more efficiently. My combined shelving unit in the kitchen allows me to display the crème de la crème of my dishware on glass-fronted cabinets, while the cabinets below are reserved for the cooking pots and less-sightly pantry items.

19. Use the Space Under the Bed

clever storage solutions 19

Your bed takes up a fair share of space in your bedroom, and while this space may seem indefinite, you can always use the area under the bed for storage.

The only trick here is finding a way to keep the space organized, and I may just have found the perfect solution for that. All you need are a few drawers that can be custom-fitted to the bed or try storage baskets that you can easily pull out.

20. Go for a Bar Cart

clever storage solutions 20

Hosting a brunch or a tea party requires not only enough table space but also enough storage and mobility to make the event remarkable. A bar cart provides an all-around solution for such occasions.

As it already has a surface that can be used as a table and wheels for mobility, all you need to do is get ready for the event. When done, you can wash the utensils and easily put them away until the next event; talk about flexibility! You can get a pre-owned bar cart from second-hand or specialty stores.

21. Use a Wall Niche

clever storage solutions 21

Looking for a storage solution that adds a bit of visual interest? Try a wall niche. These inbuilt storage spaces add a wow factor to otherwise flat walls. They are excellent additions, especially in small spaces such as bathrooms or bedrooms.

If you are looking to add them to your living room, make them more visually appealing by using LED lights. Vary the tone of the lights to create different moods or occasionally change your ambiance.

22. Make it Uniform

clever storage solutions 22

Most storage spaces have different colors from the walls in the room. In most cases, this is an authentic wood color, and it contributes to the space’s aesthetics.

However, a uniform look introduces a unique element to the space in the sense that it provides a blank canvas for the items you’re storing to act as decor pieces. This is especially the case with bookshelves or spaces where you want colorful decor.

23. Under Sink Storage

clever storage solutions 23

If you want a clever storage solution for your kitchen detergents and other cleaning materials but don’t want to risk using precious counter space or are afraid of the inconvenience of storing them in hard-to-access areas, try the space under the sink.

You can use it to store detergent spray bottles and wipes. Having your cleaning products in one place will make the cleaning process straightforward.

24. Dish Drying Rack

clever storage solutions 24

Washing dishes is a familiar ritual after every meal, but storing the dishes in the cabinet immediately after you remove them from the dishwasher or when you are done washing them can damage the wood.

This is why I always recommend having a dish drying rack. Simply put, this clever storage solution allows water to drip down, preferably in the sink, ensuring your dishes are well-dried before putting them away.

25. Garage Wall Storage

clever storage solutions 25

The garage is one of the most-used spaces in our homes. As such, it has a variety of items that, if you aren’t careful, may end up cramping the space, ultimately making it absolute. To maximize garage storage, try installing a wall storage unit that allows you to store items vertically.

Hang various items, from sports kits to your favorite bike. I usually use my garage wall storage for my gardening tools and camping gear, which has enabled me to have a large workshop area.
